Once upon a time, there was a heart doctor with the soul of a farmer. In the spring of 1982, longing to fulfill his dream of working the land, our founder — Dr. Maurice Rawlings, Sr. — purchased 52 peaceful, rolling acres in the foothills of Lookout Mountain, in the northwest corner of Georgia.
Hoping to make the land productive, he reached out to the local Agricultural Extension Service for advice. To his disappointment, he was told the soil wasn’t ideal for traditional farming — but was perfect for growing grapes. As a lifelong wine enthusiast, Dr. Rawlings was delighted by the unexpected news. Soon after, he and his family began planting vines on the property, not knowing they were creating the roots of Georgia’s first farm winery.
More than 40 years later, Georgia Winery remains proudly family-owned and operated — now in its third generation! The wines we craft today are not only American-made, but distinctly Southern in character. From Dr. Rawlings’s original recipe to our modern fermentation methods, each bottle is carefully made to capture the full, fresh essence of the fruit.
Our winemaking and hospitality teams are still guided by Dr. Rawlings’s vision: to create flavorful wines from locally grown grapes, and to share that joy with every guest who walks through our doors. Come savor true Southern hospitality, explore our award-winning wines, and raise a glass to Georgia heritage — with Sweet Southern Wine.
